Do I need to take the IELTS to study in Canada?

To study at a Canadian institution, proficiency in one of Canada’s two official languages—English or French—is required.

Canadian post-secondary institutions set their own language proficiency requirements for international students, which can vary from one school to another.

When preparing your application, check the specific language requirements for your program. Some schools even offer the option to take English courses once your studies have begun.

In some cases, international students may not need to prove their language skills. For example, if you are from an English-speaking country or have studied in English, you might not need to take the IELTS.

Each institution has its own language criteria, so it is essential to verify the specific requirements of the school to which you are applying.

Checklist of Documents for International Students

Some documents are required to complete your application. Here is a list of documents that you may be asked to provide:

  • Letter of Acceptance: An official document from the school confirming that you are admitted to your study program.
  • Proof of Financial Support: You must demonstrate that you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself and any accompanying family members. This includes the ability to cover tuition fees and living expenses (housing, food, etc.) for the first year in Canada.
  • Identity Documents: Birth certificate, marriage certificate (if applicable), and passport.

What are the conditions for a Canadian study permit?

The Canadian study permit imposes certain conditions that you must adhere to in order to maintain all the benefits associated with your study experience.

  • You must be enrolled in a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • You must be registered as a full-time student, except in Quebec where part-time enrollment is also permitted.
  • You must not take an authorized leave of more than 150 days during your study program.

It is essential to understand and comply with the conditions of your study permit to maximize your experience in Canada. By meeting these requirements, you also increase your chances of obtaining a post-graduation work permit at the end of your studies.

What is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)?

A Designated Learning Institution (DLI) is any school approved to admit international students.

What are the requirements to study in Quebec?

To study in Quebec, you need to obtain a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ). This document, issued by the Ministry of Immigration, Francisation, and Integration (MIFI), confirms that you are authorized to study in Quebec as an international student. The CAQ is required before you can apply for a study permit if your program is located in Quebec.

To apply for a CAQ, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Be accepted into a Designated Learning Institution in Quebec
  • Pay the fees associated with the CAQ application
  • Accept and comply with the conditions of the CAQ for studies

You do not need a CAQ or study permit if your program is less than six months long.

Once you have obtained your CAQ, you can submit a study permit application to the Canadian government. After receiving your permit, you will be ready to start your studies in Canada!
